African catfish — Clarias gariepinus

The African catfish is a warm-water, freshwater, bottom-dwelling species, originally native to Africa and parts of Asia. It is widely appreciated for its high-quality meat and excellent taste, and it is one of the most widely farmed fish species globally.

Our strain has been selectively bred for over 30 years, focusing on key traits such as growth rate, adaptability to farming conditions and reduced cannibalism. Although our fish are bred in southern Sweden, the species naturally thrives in warm freshwater environments.

Our fish are
  • Proven to perform in intensive production
  • Selected for high survival and strong growth
  • Consistent and predictable across batches
  • Adapted to modern recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS)
  • Raised without antibiotic usage
About us

BRED IN THE HATCHERY - PROVEN ON THE FARM

GF-Hatchery was founded in 2021 by Johan Ljungquist and Mikael Olenmark. It is part of Scandinavian Aquasystems, the Swedish aquaculture company they established in 2013 with a focus on sustainable, land-based fish farming. In September 2021, we entered into an agreement with Fleuren & Nooijen for the supply of African catfish breeders — and today we proudly supply Swedish-produced African catfish to customers worldwide.

Our hatchery is fully integrated with our commercial farming operations. Every batch of fry and every broodstock line is continuously tested under real production conditions — the result is robust, fast-growing fish that perform reliably in intensive systems.

We combine proven Dutch genetics with controlled hatchery conditions and strict biosecurity protocols to ensure consistent quality in every batch. We operate without the use of antibiotics, focusing instead on prevention through strong genetics, optimal water quality and high biosecurity standards — giving our customers a reliable, sustainable foundation for their production.
